Well, the trailer for My Friend Dahmer is out, and if you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to grow up with a serial killer, here’s your answer.
Turns out it’s creepy. But kind of cool?
My Friend Dahmer is based on the classic graphic novel of the same name by underground cartoonist John “Derf” Backderf. The movie and the novel tell the true story of Derf’s high-school friendship with notorious serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer.
It’s a tricky act to pull off: showing Dahmer as a sympathetic character without ignoring the crimes he would come to commit or the warning signs they might have caught. Ross Lynch plays Dahmer with a dejected slouch and a near-catatonic bearing.
The trailer shows us the friend group who takes Dahmer under their wing as a kind of project, as well as glimpses of the future killer’s isolation, binge-drinking, and early fascination with death and murder.
My Friend Dahmer is in theaters November 3rd.
