On Monday afternoon in Toronto, while the pedestrians were enjoying a sunny walk, a driver in a white Ryder rental van pulled onto the sidewalk around 1:30 pm, killing 10 people and injuring 16 others on Yonge street.
Peter Yuen, the acting deputy chief of the Toronto police department, says, “I ask the city of Toronto to pray for our victims and to help the Toronto police service bring this matter to a successful conclusion.”
Within an hour, authorities found and arrested the suspected driver, who has been identified as 25-year-old Alek Minassian.
One of the witnesses, Ahm Yu-Jin said, “I was in my car and I saw a white van going on the sidewalk. I heard a big bang and the van hit a bus shelter and hit people. I’m so lucky, I could have been hit.”
Photos of the site were gory and heart-rending, showing blood stains and at least one body covered with a tarp on the sidewalk.
Police have yet to investigate into the reason for the incident. Subway service in the city was partially stopped, and the crash area was sealed, discouraging people to enter the area.
Justin Trudeau, the Canadian Prime Minister said on Monday, “Our thoughts are obviously with all of those affected. We are still gathering information… we will keep Canadians updated.”
