This Video of an Oil Painting Restoration is Mesmerizing

Old paintings are often plagued by a film of yellow and brown varnish that is intended to protect the artwork. But after restorations, painting restorers discover that the artwork is still perfectly intact.

Philip Mould, an art dealer and TV personality, posts videos of artwork getting restored. His most recent video shows a Jacobean (1603-1625) era painting getting restored to it’s natural state.

It’s literally amazing to watch this restoration:

As the 200-year-old varnish is removed, vibrant colors emerge from the original painting:

This is huge for history.
