Who Needs Facebook? The Winklevoss Twins Are Now Bitcoin Billionaires

Twins Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, previously most famous for suing Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg over credit for the social media giant’s creation, are now believed to be among the first people in the world to become billionaires through Bitcoin investments. The cryptocurrency’s value hit $11,500 on Monday, its highest value to date.

The twins took $11 million of their $65 million Facebook lawsuit payout and invested it into Bitcoin in 2013. Since then, its value has skyrocketed into a 10,000% increase from when they made their first investment. While they’ve been involved with Bitcoin for a few years now, this most recent payout is by far the most successful venture the Winklevosses have had with the cryptocurrency after having spent the last two years working on their own Bitcoin exchange which was dashed by the Security and Exchange Commission in the spring.

Tyler Winklevoss has actually said that he believes Bitcoin will ultimately be more impactful than Facebook, telling The Guardian that,

Bitcoin potentially could be more impactful because being able to donate $0.50 to someone across the world has more impact than potentially sharing a picture.

Is that a way of saying, “Yeah, we lost that one but what we’ve got now is way better”? Maybe, but it looks like their Bitcoin venture has worked out just fine for them regardless.
