In 1964, Roald Dahl introduced the world to the magical world of Willy Wonka and his Oompa Loompas via his wonderful novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. In 1971 Gene Wilder took on the role of Wonka in the film adaptation of the book. And more than thirty years later Johnny Depp filled Wilder’s gigantic shoes in Tim Burton’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Now Warner Bros. is making a prequel to the Wonka story, and I really hope we get to see the native Oompa land where Wonka first discovered them. Back in 2016, Warner Bros. acquired the rights to Dahl’s iconic chocolatier character from the author’s estate, and announced plans to develop a new movie centered on Wonka’s early adventures before he opened his famous chocolate factory. And as luck should have it, a rumor has indeed been circulating that a major focus of the film will be Oompa Loompa land.
The other exciting rumor that has been spreading about is that Ryan Gosling is lined up to star as Wonka. So… that is brilliant. I can totally see that being an amazing cast. Plus we all know that Gosling can sing and dance damned well now from La La Land, so if the prequel has some singing á la Gene Wilder in ’71, we know he will be able to rise to the occasion.
