In You Were Never Really Here, the majority of Joaquin Phoenix’s face is covered by a huge beard and occasionally a baseball cap and blood splatter. Sound like a recipe for indulgent disaster? Maybe not so much, as the ultra-disheveled look appears to be an appropriate fit for his role as a veteran suffering from what appears to be PTSD, or perhaps some trippier form of trauma.
Phoenix’s character gets through his days by tracking down missing girls, but of course something goes wrong in the latest assignment. That’s how these movies tend to stir up their conflicts, after all.
The trailer is so frenetically edited that it is a bit tricky to make heads or tails of what is going on plot-wise. But I have a feeling that is intentional and that the movie itself will also be assembled much the same way.
YWNRH comes to us from director Lynne Ramsay, whose last feature was We Need to Talk About Kevin, which starred Ezra Miller (aka the big-screen Flash) as a, shall we say, “troubled” teenager.
You Were Never Really Here arrives in theaters in limited release starting April 6, 2018. Watch the trailer below:
